Abstract

After decades of research and development, implant dentistry has reached the mature stage of a predictable and successful treatment modality. General practitioners and specialists alike invest a lot of time and effort to optimize procedures and devices in order to ensure the best possible outcomes. Nevertheless, complications, failures and problems of different sorts are not uncommon, while implants seem to top the lists of insurance claims and patient complaint hearings.
As clinicians, we have developed sophisticated measurements to assess the success of treatment with dental implants, based on soft and hard tissue outcomes, aesthetics and function. It is evident however that our patients have very different parametres to perceive success. It is not uncommon, in particular when it comes to larger oral rehabilitations, that successful clinical outcomes are experienced by the patient as unsuccessful treatments and vice versa.
