- > The objectives of the presentation include highlighting regional differences or similarities in the provision of basic oral care to rural communities, sharing success stories and challenges associated with access and delivery of the basic package of oral care in rural communities of Africa and proposing/suggesting solutions to overcome challenges encountered in its delivery.
The majority of rural and urban poor communities are not accessing essential oral care because it is either not available or unaffordable. Training of dental auxiliaries stationed in rural health facilities to provide basic oral care may address issues of access and delivery of oral care in rural areas. Cost effective approaches and tools with the potential to improve access to oral health services in rural communities of developing countries are available. However, there is a need to examine factors which contribute to the success or failure of oral health service delivery and uptake in rural communities of Africa.
