Learning Objectives

  • > Attendants of this seminar should be able to:
  • > Identify the interrelation of biological and technical factors in the development of complications of dental implant therapy.
  • > Define the importance of comprehensive treatment planning for the successful long-term outcomes of implant therapy
  • > Define interdisciplinary comprehensive strategies for patient maintenance and prevention of complications.

Thanks to many decades of research and development, implant dentistry can now benefit a wide segment of our  patients with increasingly successful treatment outcomes. Despite the significant progress made however, implant treatments are often challenging and complications or failures not uncommon. As the application of dental implants is increasing, so will increase the complexity of the treatments that we will need to design, as well as inevitably the number of complications we encounter in dental practice.

Typically, implant complications have been classified as biological and technical - often examined as separate and non- relatedpathologies. Increasingevidencehowevershowssignificantinterrelationbetweenthetwotypes, emphasizingthe multidisciplinary and comprehensive nature of implant dentistry as a treatment modality. Consequently, understanding of both biological mechanisms as well as technical limitations through a multidisciplinary and comprehensive approach might be the key to successfully maintaining the outcomes of implant therapy in the long term and ensuring healthy and satisfied patients.

This lecture will identify the most common problem encountered with dental implants in the medium/ long term and will describe comprehensive strategies for patient maintenance, prevention and early diagnosis of complications.
