PERIODONTOLOGY AND IMPLANTOLOGY – A CLINICAL CONCEPT
Stefan Fickl (Germany)

Learning Objectives

  • > To learn how to place implants in the periodontal patient.
  • > To learn how to use techniques from periodontology to improve the aesthetic outcome of anterior zone reconstructions.
  • > To learn how to reduce the risk for peri-implantitis in periodontal patients.

Abstract

Periodontal patients are often in need of dental reconstructions due to tooth loss. However,  dental implants may be     at a higher risk in patients with a history of periodontitis. Today different strategies are used to decrease the risk for biological complications in these patients. On the other hand, techniques from periodontology have been transferred    to implantology to improve the aesthetic outcome of implant procedures. The objective of this presentation is to show   a clinical concept combining periodontology and implantology.

IMPLANTS IN PERIODONTAL COMPROMISED DENTITION - A TREATMENT CONCEPT OF RISK DECISION
Karl Ludwig Ackermann (Germany)

Learning Objectives

  • > Decision-making in periodontal diseases and implant therapy

Abstract

The natural tooth and its through evolution preformed environment represent the bio - physiological and functional optimum! In cases of impaired health, all diagnostic and therapeutic measures must be explored to ensure long term restoration and preservation of all structures. The struggle for periodontally extreme compromised teeth must be structured, evidence-based, and results-oriented with success as the long-term goal.

If conventional strategies to maintain the hard and soft tissue structures have failed, the tooth must be extracted. Perio- implant-prosthetic rehabilitation is then the option of choice.

Implants are not to be seen as a last resort anymore. Instead, they are part of a coordinated treatment sequence aiming for structural and functional integrity and avoiding further damage.

This lecture focuses on perio-implant-prosthetic solutions in perio-compromised outcomes.
