Potentially malignant disorders of the oral cavity: oral leukoplakia

Jose Bagan (Spain)

Time: 12:00 - 13:00
Room: EL GRECO (PV7)
Language: Spanish
Chair(s): Luis Rasal (Spain)

Learning Objectives

  • > To describe the most common potentially malignant disorders
  • > To analyse the different therapeutic methods to manage potentially malignant disorders.
  • > To analyse the rate of malignant transformation of proliferative verrucous leukoplakia.

Oral leukoplakia is the most common potentially malignant disorder. Non-homogeneous leukoplakia has the higher risk of malignant transformation. The presence of epithelial dysplasia may be even more important in predicting malignant development than the clinical characteristics. Some biomolecular markers could be considered complementary to conventional prognostic evaluation.

Proliferative verrucous leukoplakia is an unknown disease in which no etiological factor has been proven until today.  The diagnostic criteria are not well established, and many patients are diagnosed many years after the first presentation of the disease, mostly retrospectively. The main topics of the disease are the high rate of malignant transformation, the lack of a successful treatment, and the number of recurrences after management.
