Michael Glick (USA)

Learning Objectives

  • > Assess the validity of the biomedical literature;
  • > Recognize how published data can be misleading;
  • > Use the literature for the benefit of patients

Abstract

With a never-ending onslaught of clinical and other scientific information from multiple sources, oral health professionals need to become more integrative and critical thinkers. Patients will also have access to up-to-date medical information and challenge their oral health care provider to use this information for their benefit. This presentation will show how published data cannot always be relied upon, and highlight how to interpret, challenge and use published information.

CRITICAL THINKING: THEORY TO PRACTICE
David C. Johnsen (USA)

Learning Objectives

The attendee will:
  • > Know at least one definition of critical thinking
  • > List concepts key to developing critical thinking skill sets relevant to dentistry
  • > Critique critical thinking skill sets presented
  • > Outline a critical thinking skill set relevant to dentistry.

Abstract

Critical thinking pervades essentially everything we do in dentistry. Yet  mystery still surrounds the thought process of the expert engaged in critical thinking. The purpose of this presentation is to offer concepts in developing critical thinking skill sets for the practitioner, centered around deriving the thought process of the expert in situations common in dentistry. Examples include treatment planning, risk assessment, inter-professional practice, evidence based dentistry and others. Attendees will be asked to critique critical thinking skill sets presented and to outline one of their own.
