Learning Objectives

  • > Know the most frequent and/or severe adverse events occurring in the general dental practice
  • > Know the most efficient measures to avoid or reduce their impact
  • > Know how to report adverse events in the dental office and find training resources on patient safety

The clinical safety of dental patients should be high priority in our profession. Until recently, there have been few efforts to determine the actual incidence of adverse events in the dental practice, or develop measures that can effectively prevent them.

Some of the potentially most serious adverse events are related to infection control practices, allergic drugs reactions and unfortunate surgical treatment outcomes. Although these are important to focus on, understanding the underlying systemic causes will be key to eliminating adverse events in the dental office.
